Jewelry Care

A piece made to last generations asks for a little tending in return. A few quiet habits will keep your jewelry as alive as the day it left the bench.

  1. I

    Daily Wear

A bespoke piece is meant to be worn — but worn thoughtfully. Put your jewelry on last, after fragrance, lotion, and hairspray have settled, and remove it before activities that ask too much of it.

Avoid contact with chlorine, salt water, household cleaners, and abrasive surfaces. Remove rings and bracelets before sleeping, gardening, exercise, or swimming. Even the hardest stones can chip on impact, and gold of any karat is a soft, living metal that records the life you wear it through.

  2. II

    Cleaning

For most pieces, a soft brush, lukewarm water, and a drop of mild dish soap is all that's needed. Soak briefly, agitate gently around the setting, rinse with clear water, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Treat coloured stones — emerald, opal, turquoise, pearl, and lapis among them — with extra restraint. Skip the soak, wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth, and never expose them to ultrasonic or steam cleaners. When in doubt, leave the deeper cleaning to us.

  3. III

    Storage

Store each piece on its own. Soft pouches, lined compartments, or the original box keep harder stones from scratching softer metals and keep chains from tangling.

Keep your collection somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Sterling silver in particular benefits from an anti-tarnish strip; gold and platinum simply ask to be kept dry and apart.

  4. IV

    Professional Care

We recommend bringing your piece in for inspection roughly once a year — sooner if a stone feels loose or a clasp begins to give. A trained eye can catch a worn prong or thinning shank long before it becomes a loss.

Polishing, re-tipping, refinishing, and stone tightening are all part of the long life of a fine piece. Reach out and we will arrange care, here at the bench where the piece was first made.
